UCL leads the UK in health research according to the REF 2021

18 May 2022

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 has recognised UCL as the top university in the UK for the quality and impact of its research in medicine, health and life sciences. The success includes major contributions from the Faculty of Brain Sciences, which the Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) sits within. The NIHR Moorfields BRC has played an important role in this achievement through its support of life-changing research at the IoO.

Published on 12 May, the REF 2021 results rank UCL as second for overall research quality in the UK behind the University of Oxford. Read the full story on the UCL Brain Sciences website.

Of the 15 case studies submitted to the REF highlighting the impact of research at UCL Brain Sciences, two were from the Institute of Ophthalmology:

  • The Laser in Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension Trial (LiGHT), which has led to major changes in the guidelines for treating glaucoma patients in the UK, Europe and the US. You can read more about it on the UCL Impact website as well as a news item on our website.

  • A research series culminating in the world’s first gene therapies that will transform lives of children with sight impairment. Read more on the UCL Impact website.
